I can't think of a suitable title for this post so I'll just leave it blank.

Little Ellie had diarrhea. It started from last Sunday, 16th July. Her poo was watery, with some pale yellowish coloured bits. There wasn't much smell. When she went again a 2nd time, I paged for Dr. Winston via the 24 hour emergency hotline.

He said it was a bit late to be the side effect from the RotaVirus vaccine we gave her on the Friday the week before. He told us to give Ellie lots of fluids and to monitor her condition.

Couple of days later, she wasn't getting any better so Lina and her mum brought Ellie to Kid's Link to see Dr. Winston. He said it might be because of the bacteria in the environment which was quite prevalent recently and making kids sick. It might also be a sudden development of cow's milk and/or lactose intolerance. It might also be a delayed side effect of the RotaVirus vaccine.

Whatever the case, Dr. Winston prescribed little Ellie two different medications, to be taken twice a day. One was a citrus sweet smelling powder and the other was a powdery smelling mix. Little Ellie could tolerate the sweet smelling one but when given the powdery mix, she threw everything up. In a way, she's quite smart. Well, nobody likes foul tasting medication, don't they? So it's pretty normal. One medication was supposedly to ease off the diarrhea and the other medication was, as Dr. Winston said, good bacteria to get rid of the bad bacteria in the gut. Maybe that was why this powdery mix doesn't taste as sweet. It's bacteria in powder form!

The nurse also gave Lina a small tin of soy based formula milk to feed Ellie. It's Nursoy. I've never heard or seen or read about it any where. It's a product of Wyeth, Ireland. It doesn't taste as good as the Nan HA which Ellie has been taking for more than 2 months. But then again, soy based and HA (Hypo-Allergic) formula milk doesn't score in the taste department. I guess Ellie would prefer the taste of Enfalac A+ best. Anyway, she's been a good little baby and she's taking Nursoy in her strides.

There was improvement and she got better. Today, Lina's mum put Ellie back on her Nan HA. She poo'ed after her first feed. The poo was normal enough and there wasn't any cause for concern. Lina and I brought little Ellie home and when she was about to finish her 2nd feed of Nan HA, she had the runs again. Lina wanted to bring her back to see Dr. Winston but the clinic closed at 1230pm today and it is closed on Sundays. So I paged for Dr. Winston again.

He said as long as there's no fever or vomiting, little Ellie is going to be fine. It might be that probably her gut is still not strong enough to tolerate cow's milk so soon. We'd have to put her on soy based formula for the time being and to monitor her condition for today and tomorrow. If she's still having the runs on Monday, we'd have to bring her back to see Dr. Winston.

Since the Nursoy was about to finish and it was left at Lina's mum's place, I went out to the nearby supermarket to get a tin. This was the time for me to compare the soy based formula being sold. One popular brand recommended by people was Isomil. This was the brand recommended by my doctor too. This was also the brand Dr. Winston first mentioned, instead of Nursoy. After comparing Isomil with Nursoy, Isomil wins by a small margin. It had slightly more vitamins and minerals. However, the Isomil Advanced Formula wins by a mile. This Advanced Formula Isomil has AA and DHA added. These two are commonly known to help promote healthy eyes and brain function development.

So I bought it.

Now we shall see how is Ellie holding up. An update will be posted within the week.
